چکیده

Let P be a set of n points in ~d (where d is a small fixed positive integer), and let F be a collection of subsets of ~d, each of which is defined by a constant number of bounded degree polynomial inequalities. We consider the following F-range searching problem: Given P, build a data structure for efficient answering of queries of the form, "Given a 7 ~ F, count (or report) the points of P lying in 7." Generalizing the simplex range searching techniques, we give a solution with nearly linear space and preprocessing time and with O(n 1-x/b+~) query time, where d < b < 2d-3 and ~ > 0 is an arbitrarily small constant. The acutal value of b is related to the problem of partitioning arrangements of algebraic surfaces into cells with a constant description complexity. We present some of the applications of F-range searching problem, including improved ray shooting among triangles in ~3

Convexifying Positive Polynomials and Sums of Squares Approximation

We show that if a polynomial f ∈ R[x1, . . . , xn] is nonnegative on a closed basic semialgebraic set X = {x ∈ Rn : g1(x) ≥ 0, . . . , gr(x) ≥ 0}, where g1, . . . , gr ∈ R[x1, . . . , xn], then f can be approximated uniformly on compact sets by polynomials of the form σ0 + φ(g1)g1 + · · ·+ φ(gr)gr, where σ0 ∈ R[x1, . . . , xn] and φ ∈ R[t] are sums of squares of polynomials. In particular, if X...

Minimizing Polynomials Over Semialgebraic Sets

This paper concerns a method for finding the minimum of a polynomial on a semialgebraic set, i.e., a set in R defined by finitely many polynomial equations and inequalities, using the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system and sum of squares (SOS) relaxations. This generalizes results in the recent paper [15], which considers minimizing polynomials on algebraic sets, i.e., sets in R defined by finitel...

Metric Properties of Semialgebraic Mappings

We give an effective estimation from above for the local Łojasiewicz exponent for separation of semialgebraic sets and for a semialgebraic mapping on a closed semialgebraic set. We also give an effective estimation from below of the Łojasiewicz exponent in the global separation for semialgebraic sets and estimation of the Łojasiewicz exponent at infinity of a semialgebraic mapping similar to th...

The Algebraic Revolution in Combinatorial and Computational Geometry: State of the Art (Invited Talk)

For the past 10 years, combinatorial geometry (and to some extent, computational geometry too) has gone through a dramatic revolution, due to the infusion of techniques from algebraic geometry and algebra that have proven effective in solving a variety of hard problems that were thought to be unreachable with more traditional techniques. The new era has begun with two groundbreaking papers of G...

Matrix Convex Hulls of Free Semialgebraic Sets

This article resides in the realm of the noncommutative (free) analog of real algebraic geometry – the study of polynomial inequalities and equations over the real numbers – with a focus on matrix convex sets C and their projections Ĉ. A free semialgebraic set which is convex as well as bounded and open can be represented as the solution set of a Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI), a result which s...
